How To Walk With God When the Trail Goes Cold
There’s something about a good hiking trail. You lace up your boots, step into the woods, and everything feels right. The path is clear. The air is fresh. You know where you’re going.
A walk with God brings the same satisfaction. Peace becomes your new normal; not just on the trail but every day, all day long. You are energized with the presence of God and have joy knowing you are right with Him.
Remember What It Felt Like to Walk With God
“Enoch lived 365 years, walking in close fellowship with God…” (Genesis 5:23).
Every person who has ever experienced walking with God can remember a time when it was real. You could sense His presence. Prayer felt natural. His Word had fresh meaning.
Maybe it was early on—when everything felt new. When every time you opened the Bible, He showed Himself to you in an unexpected way. Or perhaps it was a moment during a hard season when God showed up to guide you through it.
That memory matters.
Think of it like hiking a familiar trail. You remember the sound of your boots on the dirt, the smell of pine, the rhythm of your breathing.
You remember when the presence of God was so real, and because of it you felt alive. Every scripture, every conversation, every thought, you quickly judged by God’s loving opinion and His desires.
At some point, the warmth and hunger that marked walking with God may seem to have changed. You may find that you don’t turn to prayer when something goes awry; your time in the Bible lessens.
When you notice that change, don’t ignore it.
This is when you activate your memory of closeness with Him. The Bible calls it “stirring yourself to remembrance.” Think back on the time when you felt closest to God. When He showed up in a situation. When every moment in the Word was filled with revelation.
Those memories are not designed to frustrate you. They can serve as a guide to get you back on track
You Didn’t Lose God—You Lost Focus
“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy…” (John 10:10).
When walking with God feels distant, forced and stilted, it’s not because God moved. It’s because distractions pulled your attention away.
Life gets busy. Responsibilities pile up. And without realizing it, your focus shifts from daily walking with God to everything else. The Bible refers to it as the “cares of this world.”
You have an enemy who wants exactly that. His goal is to steal your attention, dull your desire for God, and make your time close to God feel like a distant memory. When you find that happening, repent. John wrote, “If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness” (1 John 1:9).
Somehow life has lost its luster. Your energy level drops, and peace and joy seem just out of reach. Your purpose and the clarity you once knew has faded.
But here’s the truth: God is still right where He’s always been.
The Bible instructs you to “come close to God, and God will come close to you…” (James 4:8).
Notice the order. You move first by repenting. God is still very close; it is your attention that needs to return to Him.
Rebuild the Basics of Your Walk With God
“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night…” (Joshua 1:8).
When you lose a trail while hiking, you don’t panic; you go back to basics. You check your map. You look for markers. You reorient yourself.
If the presence of God feels distant, it doesn’t mean it’s gone. It just means you’ve stepped off the trail.
And the good news? God hasn’t moved. His presence hasn’t changed. Your ability to walk with Him hasn’t disappeared, it just needs to be reengaged.
When you notice the relationship changing, recall the times you felt very close to God. Ask yourself: What was different then? Revisit the times you walked with God.
To regain that closeness, there are things you can do: Acknowledge God before anything else; set a specific daily quiet time for Him (even if it is only a few minutes); intentionally listen to God; read a passage of Scripture and ponder it during the day.
Speak Life Back Into Your Walk With God
“The tongue can bring death or life…” (Proverbs 18:21).
Words matter. If walking with God is something you long for, examine your words. Are they in line with God’s Word or with your feelings?
Remind yourself that “God is with me.” Declare over yourself that “my desire to know God is growing,” and “I see God’s presence in my life.”
This isn’t a drab exercise; it’s aligning your heart with God’s Word.
The path back to walking with God is clear:
- Prayer
- Praise and worship
- Bible study
- Meditation on God’s Word.
These aren’t religious tasks; they are lovingly designed tools created by God to equip us to remain close to Him, His Word and His purpose.
Walking with God isn’t just something you do in quiet moments; it’s something you carry into everything.
Walking with God should happen all the time: at work, in the car, at the gym, at the playground, during date night and every moment in between. God never intended your daily walk with Him to stay in one place.
Spending time out in God’s creation is a beautiful and meaningful way to enjoy walking with God. Away from the noise and clutter of life. On the trail. Remember: God is always available.
Start simple. Stay consistent. Turn your focus back to Him.
Before long, what once felt cold will come alive again; and you won’t just remember your walk with God—you’ll be living it!
