Walking on Sunshine | Practical Ways To Stay Happy This Summer

3 min

Many people long to stay happy, especially during the summer months when life seems like it should feel lighter and more joyful. Yet real happiness doesn’t just happen because the sun is shining; it’s something you build intentionally. When your spirit, mind and body are aligned with God’s truth, you begin to feel light on your feet, able to move through life with peace, purpose and resilience.

God has already provided a path for you to live this way.

There are these five biblical principles that are practical, everyday tools to help you stay happy no matter what comes your way. It’s time to truly experience the freedom and joy Jesus made available to you.

Start From a Place of Relationship

Learning to stay happy begins with having a solid spiritual foundation. A thriving relationship with Jesus is a daily source of strength, joy and identity. Romans 10:9 says, “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Receiving Jesus as your Lord and Savior is the first step to a new way of living, one where you tap into the true source of happiness and are no longer striving to manufacture it.

After you decide to follow Jesus, how can you navigate life with confidence and peace? Start each day by acknowledging God before anything else. Even a simple prayer like, “Lord, I give You today. Lead me and guide me,” can shift your mindset. Spend a few minutes reading Scripture, even if it’s just a verse or two, and invite the Holy Spirit into your thoughts, conversations and decisions. These small, consistent actions help you stay grounded and keep your heart light on your feet rather than weighed down by distractions or stress.

Cling to the Lord’s Promise | Train Your Mind To Focus on Truth

Guarding your thoughts is critical if you want to stay happy. Psalm 91:16 says, “I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.” That promise is not just comforting, it’s powerful when you actively hold onto it. In everyday life, your mind will constantly try to drift toward worry, fear or negativity. The key is to train yourself to notice when your thoughts are dragging you down, then redirecting those thoughts intentionally.

Write down a promise from Scripture and place it somewhere visible—your mirror, your phone background or even your car dashboard. Read it out loud in the morning and again before bed. When stressful thoughts arise, pause and replace them with God’s truth. For example, instead of thinking, I can’t handle this, remind yourself, God is with me, and He will answer when I call. This practice rewires your thinking over time, and helps you stay happy by focusing on what is stable and unchanging rather than what is uncertain.

You could use one or more of the following scriptures:

  • “So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever” (2 Corinthians 4:18).
  • “The LORD helps them, rescuing them from the wicked. He saves them, and they find shelter in him” (Psalm 37:40).
  • “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow” (James 1:17).
  • “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise” (Philippians 4:8).

Live Every Day With Purpose

One of the most overlooked ways to stay happy is simply to live with purpose. When you know you are doing what God has called you to do, even in small ways, your life becomes more meaningful and energized. That sense of purpose naturally makes you feel light on your feet instead of stuck or stagnant.

You don’t have to wait for a big assignment. Purpose shows up in everyday actions. Start by asking God each morning, “How can I serve You today?” Then pause and act on what He quickens to your heart.

By listening to the Lord every day and following His promptings, you can be a light for Jesus. You can be the answer someone else needs by encouraging them with a kind message, praying for them, giving to them generously, or investing your time in sitting beside them when they need a friend.

If you feel called to something specific—whether it’s ministry, creativity or serving others—take one small step toward it each day. Purpose doesn’t just create productivity; it creates joy. When you’re focused on contributing and serving, you naturally shift away from negative thoughts and toward a more fulfilling, happy life.

Receive Forgiveness | Let Go of Guilt Quickly

One of the biggest barriers to staying happy is carrying guilt from past mistakes. But 1 John 1:9 gives a clear promise: “If we confess our sins… he is faithful and just to forgive us.” That means you don’t have to hold onto regret or shame.

The key is to respond quickly when you make a mistake. Instead of avoiding God or replaying the situation over and over in your mind, go to Him immediately. Say, “Lord, I am sorry for what I have done. I receive Your forgiveness right now,” and believe that He has truly cleansed you. Then make any necessary changes and move forward. Holding onto guilt only weighs you down, but receiving forgiveness allows you to feel light on your feet again, free to move forward with confidence and joy. Remember, everyone makes mistakes, but you don’t have to let them define your day or your future.

If you have old hurts or burdens from the past, take each one of them to the Lord and let them go. It is not too late.

Protect Your Joy at All Costs

If you truly want to stay happy, forgiveness is nonnegotiable. Matthew 6:15 makes it clear that holding onto unforgiveness affects your own freedom. When you carry resentment, it creates a heaviness that steals your peace and joy. Forgiveness, on the other hand, releases that weight.

It’s important to understand that forgiveness is a decision, not a feeling. You may not feel ready, but you can still choose to forgive. Start by saying, “I choose to forgive this person,” even if your emotions don’t match yet. When the memory or hurt resurfaces, repeat your decision and refuse to dwell on it. Over time, any emotional hold will weaken.

Forgiveness doesn’t excuse what happened; it simply frees you from being tied to it. And when you let go, you’ll find yourself lighter, freer and much more able to stay happy in your everyday life.

Reset and Refocus | Be Light on Your Feet

This summer, you have an opportunity to reset and refocus. Instead of being weighed down by stress or negativity, you can be light on your feet, able to move through each day with peace and confidence. Choose to start your days with God, fill your mind with His promises, live with purpose, release guilt quickly, and forgive freely. These steps, while simple, are transformative when practiced consistently. Over time, they can revolutionize your mood and your entire outlook on life.

You were designed by God to stay happy in a deep, lasting way that comes from knowing who you are and whose you are. Jesus paid for your freedom. And by putting these principles into action, you can walk through this season and every season feeling truly alive, at peace, and yes…walking on sunshine.
